5 ways to sleep like a Scandi (includes nudity)

Sleep. What’s that like? From raising a few children to moving into peri-menopause – sleep is a fond memory at this stage. So researching how to get sleep was a labour of love for me.

Recent studies reveal where the best sleepers in the world live. The Netherlands is the place to be if sleeping if your jam. The nightly average in the Netherlands is eight hours and twelve minutes of high quality shut eye.

So how do we make like the Dutch and get a good nights sleep?

Air your doona outside once a week

The Scani’s love to do this. The cold, dry air effectively removes moisture. Sunlight has antibacterial properties so give your doona a sun blast (it will also help to remove stains).

Get your own damn doona

When you sleep with someone else, it can be difficult to regulate your body temperature. The Dutch like to use their own doona, one that suits their temperature and prevents tossing and turning as your partners moves in their sleep. Looking for new bedding? Check out our Kip & Co range

Leave your bedroom window open

The fresh air circulates better when the window is open. If it’s hot outside, use a fan a air conditioner to keep the temperature down.

Many babies in Sweden, Finland and Denmark sleep outside, even in freezing conditions. This is due to many studies showing that exposure to cold helps regulate body temperature which transitions the body into a restful state.

Try a sauna or a hot bath

An evening sauna session can help relax your muscles and calm your nervous system. You will sleep better when relaxed, so spend a couple of hours in the sauna about an hour or two before bedtime. Alternatively – if you don’t happen to have a sauna in your home (why not?!), then immerse yourself into a nice hot bath with essential oils to create a calm and nurturing environment that will bring your senses back to calm.

Get your kit off

Yep, sleeping in the nudey rude may help you sleep better. Sleeping sans jammies helps to cool your body temperature, however researchers have found that sleeping naked may also potentially positively impact reproductive health, connection with a partner and self esteem. So there are lots of reasons to pop on your birthday suit before bed.
